The Year of the Snake

The Year of the Snake

When 50 year old West African artist Romuald Hazoume created the “Rainbow Serpent”, he may not have been thinking of the 2013 Chinese New Year ~ Year of the Snake.

The Snake is keen and cunning, intelligent and wise; willing to sacrifice worldly possessions for food and protection of his family.

Made out of recycled jerry cans that are used to carry gasoline, Romuald Hazoume examines the exploitation of resources in his town of Benin. The serpent demonstrates that one action does affect the community beyond its borders.

Look closer and see the “lucky” snake in the act of devouring itself.
