5th March – Engage in conversation with the people who serve you

Ash Wednesday, 2014

I don’t like to go to the dentist. To mask my fears I make edgy comments with the people I interact with in the dental office. From the receptionist, dental hygienist to my female dentist, I am snarky.  The banter continues for the entire visit. Lent is a time for reflection and transformation. So I gave some thought to my behavior during this necessary visit. What I came to realize is that, the visits don’t go any better, nor does my attitude alleviate the pain. So for today, I engaged in a kind conversation with the three people who provided this “service” to me. I avoided the response to, “How are you, Charlene” (which is generally), Fine except for having to be here. After being scraped and jabbed and poked by the hygienist, I complimented her on a job well done. She said, “That’s so nice to hear. No one ever thanks me.”  Finally, when I mentioned to the dentist, that things went so well today. She mentioned that I have been doing a very good job at caring for my teeth.  Yup, I caught a lot of flies with the honey today.
