The Book of Jonah: it’s only a couple of pages in the Bible. But from Prophet to Pinocchio, we are familiar with the story of God, a man and a whale. Dismissing him as a minor player who was reduced to a cartoon character, I was recently reintroduced to Jonah during the pastor’s sermon on “A God of Second Chances.”
No background, no introduction, the story opens with God commanding, daring Jonah to pronounce judgment on the citizens of Ninevah. He learns all too quickly that you cannot run and hide from God.
The story ends with a “Job-like” dialog between God and Jonah where God leaves us with a biting, rhetorical question. Shouldn’t you return to the book and examine this veggie tale a little more closely?
